Shooragoviya 2

Priyantha Weeraratne, a 38 year old farmer from Angunukolapelassa was crowned as the CIC Shooragoviya at a glittering ceremony attended by the Prime Minister Hon D M Jayaratne and other Ministers and held at the BMICH .Weeraratne a farmer who is involved in the cultivation of Paddy, fruits and vegetables in a 15 acre plot received his award from the Prime Minister. In second place was Nalin Chaminda from Hettipola and in 3 rd place was Aninda Weerasinghe from Hawa Eliya.

The winner received a FAW Truck, while the 1 st runner-up received a two wheel tractor and the 2 nd runner-up took home a Motor Bike.All three winners were provided with a Educational Scholarship to Thailand to further their knowledge in Modern Agricultural Practices while all the top twenty farmers in the Shoora Goviya contest received consolation prizes.

Ministers Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene, Bandula Gunawardene, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Jagath Pushpakumara, S M Chandrasena, and Udaya Gammanpila were present at the occasion.

The Shooragoviya Contest which was organized for the 2 nd successive year attracted thousands farmers from all parts of the island. Initial selections and screening was done by the Agriculture Undergraduates from the University of Peradeniya while the final selection was carried out by Academics attached to the University of Peradeniya and the Department of Agriculture.
